Bio
Bala Murali Shingade is a prolific actor, writer, and director based in Auckland. His screen credits include Miles from Nowhere (2024) starring Arlo Green and Roxie Mohebbi, Homebound 3.0 (2023) alongside Michelle Ang, Sam Wang, and Kimberly Crossman, Shortland Street (2024-2025), and award-winning comedian Pax Assadi’s Raised by Refugees (2023).
His work in theatre includes the Pop Up Globe’s Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night directed by David Lawrence, Boom Shankar which he also co-wrote and directed, and A Fine Balance (2019) and a mixtape for maladies (2025), both with Auckland Theatre Company.
Bala’s short film, Perianayaki, premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival, where it won the NZ’s Best Short Film Award, as well as the Emerging Talent Award, a Special Mention award for lead actor Jeyagowri Sivakumaran, and the Audience Choice Award. Perianayaki has since screened at several other international film festivals, including Melbourne International Film Festival, where Bala participated in the MIFF Accelerator Lab and Show Me Shorts Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
In 2020, Bala was one of six recipients of the Arts Foundation’s inaugural Springboard award, which recognises emerging artists with outstanding potential in their fields.
Bala has advanced skills playing cricket, hockey, soccer, and riding motorcycles. He has intermediate skills speaking Hindi/Urdu and Telugu.
