Bio
Gary Young is a seasoned professional who initially trained at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in London and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree Majoring in Acting at NZ Drama School: Toi Whakaari. A dedicated and disciplined actor, Gary delves into the psychological core of his roles and relishes 'finding the touchstone'.
Compelled to seek dynamic and challenging narratives, screen highlights include feature films Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Furnace, and Niki Caro's Mulan. Television highlights include Outrageous Fortune, The Gulf, The Luminaries and Australian productions such as Underbelly, Harrow, Tidelands and political thriller Secret City. Gary also appeared as Mr Willoughby in the historical UK drama series, Outlander, which took him to Glasgow and Capetown.
A perpetual student of the 'strange vagaries' in human relationships, he also wrote, directed, and starred in his own short film Ron and Alice. He is as committed to the physicality of his roles and regularly performs his own stunts and is an accomplished practitioner of the Southern Chinese martial art, Wing Chun, rooted in the principles of motion and time. Gary served in the New Zealand military and is an avid supporter of Arsenal FC.
