A graduate of the University of Auckland (MA in Screen Production, specialising in drama directing), Bala Murali Shingade is a writer, director and actor based in Tāmaki Makaurau.

In 2022, Bala’s short film Perianayaki premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival, where it won the NZ’s Best Short Film Award, as well as the Emerging Talent Award, a Special Mention award for lead actor Jeyagowri Sivakumaran and the Audience Choice Award. Perianayaki has since screened at a number of other international film festivals, including Melbourne International Film Festival and Show Me Shorts Film Festival.
Bala’s feature film screenplay, Shanti, was selected for Script to Screen's Aotearoa Story Camp in 2021 and MIFF Accelerator Lab in 2022. In 2020, Bala was one of six recipients of the inaugural Arts Foundation’s Springboard award, which recognises emerging artists with outstanding potential. Bala was also one of three artists selected for the inaugural Q Theatre Residency in 2022.
